Characteristics
The Snake is popularly associated with thoughtfulness, observation and reserve — a quiet, perceptive figure said to think deeply before acting and to keep its own counsel. Folk descriptions credit it with wisdom and a certain elegance. These belong to the sign’s cultural image in tradition, not to any individual.
History
Sixth in the cycle and the earthly branch 巳 (sì), the Snake is sometimes called the "little dragon" (小龙), a sign of its dignified standing. Far from the sinister figure of some Western lore, in Chinese tradition it suggests wisdom, mystery and graceful intelligence, and it appears in many old tales — most famously the Legend of the White Snake — as a being of depth and feeling.
In the Great Race
The wily Snake had no wish to brave the cold river, so it coiled itself secretly around the Horse’s hoof and rode across unseen. As the Horse climbed the far bank, the Snake suddenly uncoiled in front of it; the startled Horse shied back, and the Snake slipped over the line into sixth place, just ahead of it — a piece of quiet cunning that fits its watchful reputation.
The five elements
Across the sixty-year cycle the Snake appears in five elemental tones: a Wood Snake is described as more sociable, a Fire Snake as more dynamic, an Earth Snake as steadier and calmer, a Metal Snake as more determined, and a Water Snake as especially perceptive. They are cultural shades on the same thoughtful sign, not forecasts.
