龙龍 Dragon

Characteristics

The Dragon is traditionally seen as the most charismatic of the signs — confident, ambitious and full of energy, with natural authority and a generous, idealistic streak. Folk descriptions cast it as lucky and larger-than-life. These are cultural associations attached to the sign, not statements about any one person.

History

Fifth in the cycle and the earthly branch 辰 (chén), the Dragon is unique among the twelve as a mythical creature, and it stands at the very heart of Chinese culture: a benevolent bringer of rain and rivers, an imperial emblem, and a sign of supreme good fortune. Its prestige is such that many families hope for a child in a Dragon year, and dragon dances open festivals across the calendar.

In the Great Race

The Dragon could easily have flown the race in a moment, yet arrived only fifth. Asked why, it explained that it had stopped along the way to bring rain to a parched village, then paused again at the river’s edge to puff a helpful breeze that blew the Rabbit’s log safely to shore. The detour cost it the lead but sealed its reputation for power used kindly.

The five elements

Tradition colours the Dragon by element through the cycle: a Wood Dragon is spoken of as more co-operative, a Fire Dragon as especially commanding, an Earth Dragon as steadier and more practical, a Metal Dragon as strong-willed, and a Water Dragon as calmer and more open-minded. These are storytelling shades on the same grand figure, offered as cultural flavour and not prediction.
