Characteristics
The Horse is traditionally pictured as lively, free-spirited and warm — energetic and sociable, loving travel and open spaces, quick to act and a touch impatient with routine. Folk descriptions cast it as cheerful and independent. These are cultural associations of the sign rather than claims about any particular person.
History
Seventh in the cycle and the earthly branch 午 (wǔ), the Horse has long stood for strength, freedom and forward motion, valued through Chinese history as a partner in travel, trade and war. The phrase 马到成功 ("success the moment the horse arrives") shows how closely the animal is tied to swift achievement and momentum.
In the Great Race
Galloping strongly, the Horse was among the leaders as it splashed across the river. Just as it reached the bank, the Snake — which had ridden across hidden on its hoof — darted out in front of it. The Horse reared in surprise and lost a step, and so came in seventh, just behind the creature it had unknowingly carried.
The five elements
Tradition colours the Horse by element through the cycle: a Wood Horse is spoken of as steadier, a Fire Horse as especially spirited and energetic, an Earth Horse as more settled, a Metal Horse as more single-minded, and a Water Horse as more adaptable. These are cultural flavours laid over the same lively animal, never predictions.
