木 Wood

What this phase represents

Wood (木 mù) is the phase of growth and expansion — the upward, outward push of a seedling becoming a tree. Among the five phases it stands for beginnings, vitality and the bending-but-not-breaking flexibility of living things, the quality classical writers reached for when they described something supple and resilient. As a written character 木 is itself a pictograph of a tree, with a trunk, branches and roots, and it serves as the radical in a large family of plant- and timber-related characters.

Associations

In the standard system of correspondences, wood is paired with spring, the season of new growth; with the east, the direction of the rising sun; and with the colour green, the colour of fresh leaves. Its associated qualities are generative and yielding — sprouting, branching, reaching toward light — which is why classical thought treats wood as the phase of expansion and renewal rather than of force.

Cultural use

Wood is one of the five phases woven into the sexagenary calendar, where each two-year span carries an element: years ending in 4 or 5 are wood years, so 2024–2025 was a wood period and the zodiac speaks of a "Wood Dragon" or "Wood Snake". The phases also order the trigrams and directions used in fengshui as a spatial and decorative tradition, and the green-and-east pairing recurs in temple layout and seasonal symbolism. The character 木 is a common building block in given names, evoking growth and uprightness, and a frequent motif in painting and poetry about spring.

In the two cycles

In the generating cycle (生) wood feeds fire — dry timber is what a flame consumes — so wood is the phase that produces fire and is itself produced by water, which nourishes plants. In the overcoming cycle (克) wood parts earth, the way roots split and loosen soil, so wood restrains earth and is in turn restrained by metal, whose blade cuts wood. It therefore sits at the head of the familiar ring 木→火→土→金→水.
